Discovering the Best Energy Drinks

Discovering the best energy drinks takes a little energy and a bit of ingenuity.  Some people consider soft drinks and coffee to be energy drinks because they do give an energy  perk because of their caffeine and sugar content.  An early entry into the “official” energy drink market came with the introduction of Jolt Cola in the early 1980’s.   This energy drink provided twice the caffeine found in regular colas, such as Pepsi and Coke.  It was promoted on high school and college campuses as a way to keep awake and energized during busy school months.  Other popular energy drinks that are found widely today across America are Red Bull, Full Throttle, Monster, and Rock Star.

Red Bull was introduced to the American public in the late 1990’s and was a forerunner in the energy drink market.  The company continues to have one of the best selling energy drinks on the market with sales topping 3 billion cans.  Its primary ingredient is taurine, which is a chemical which boosts energy levels.  It’s main “jolt” comes from a high percentage of caffeine.  In one 8 ounce can alone there is 80 mg of caffeine and 27 g of sugar.  People who drink Red Bull claim that it stimulates their metabolism, makes them more emotionally balanced, increases their concentration span and makes their overall physical performance better.  It is especially popular with today’s younger generation.

Coca Cola saw a profitable market in energy drinks and came out with Full Throttle in 2005.  It comes packaged in a can with a bright flaming label and contains 110 calories along with 29 g of sugar.  It claims to increase thought processes because of the ginseng extract it contains.  It also contains taurine and is marketed primarily to men in their 20’s.

Monster and Rock Star are also considered two of the best energy drinks.  Monster comes in 16 ounce cans and is priced competitively.  It has a citrus taste, much like Red Bull, and has a fascinating claw-like label.  It also is available in a low-carb version.  Rockstar is focused on the younger generation, its packaging encouraging late night parties and wild behavior.  It comes in a variety of flavors and is available as an energy drink, a cola and a juiced drink.
